Denver Pit Bull Ban Revisited After Decades

Pit bulls, outlawed from Denver more than 20 years ago, will be allowed back into city limits as service animals under a proposed law being considered today by the city council’s safety committee.
The ordinance proposed by City Attorney David Broadwell would prevent owners of the breed from being prosecuted under Denver’s anti-pit bull ordinance if the dog qualifies as a “service animal” under the federal Americans with Disabilities Act. Owners who claim their pit bulls are trained to perform tasks that help them cope with a psychical, mental or psychiatric disability will be able to claim an “affirmative defense” against any charges that their dog’s breed violates Denver law.

Mountain Town Looks To BAN Plastic Bags Altogether

TELLURIDE – The prognosis for plastic bags in this community got a little poorer after the Telluride Town Council during a worksession on Tuesday directed staff to craft an ordinance that would ban retailers within town limits from distributing them. Period.
Council will hold another worksession on the matter at its next meeting on Aug. 3, which the community, and local retailers in particular, are encouraged to attend.

Both Denver and Aurora have laws banning pit bulls. The breed, they say, is so dangerous to the public that any dog displaying more than 50 percent of pit bull-like features must be run from city limits or face extermination. But what about a pit bull acting as a service animal for a disabled person? Should officials accept dogs that their own laws deem inherently unacceptable?
